How to Install the Azolla Bed

Choose the Azolla Bed Size of your choice, depending on the Budget and Space. Mark the ground with a chalk of the desired bottom size of the Azolla Bed and make a Heap of soil with 8 inches spread on the ground and 5” height, all around the marked area and finish the job as a Rectangular Pit, which is above the ground.

Spread the Arjun Above the ground Sheet Model, Azolla bed on the top of the pit and see that the bottom PVC pipe touches the Ground and place the Rainwater Drain pipe at 5 Inch top from the ground level.

Initially fill the Bed with normal soil (Red Soil /Clay soil) up to 1“Height. Mix 5 to 10 Kgs of Cow Dung which was mixed in water before One day… Mix Bore sand 1 – 2 Kgs or Super Phosphate 250 to500 Grams.

Maintain water level up to 4” Height. Then Put 200 to 500 grams of Azolla, and it starts growing from the Next day.

Azolla does not grow in a totally shaded area or in-house, and also it does not grow well under Full Sunlight.

The Ideal Temperature is between 25 Degree to 35 Degree Celsius. It is recommended to use 50% Shade net and you can follow our type of Using Shade net so that it is less cost effective.

From a Azolla Bed of 12 x 4 x .75 feet, you get 1.5 Kgs of Azolla, every day.

Shade Net : Prefer the suitable size of shade net (50%) as given in the chart and just spread on the Azolla Bed, and put 4 Bricks on the four corners.

Maintenance & Benefits

Maintenance

  • Once in 2 Days : Mix the Azolla water and the sand with a soft cloth edged stick.
  • Once in 15 days : Drain ¾ of the water, and again refill fresh water and add 50 – 100 grams of Super Phosphate
  • Once in 3 – 4 months : remove the base soil and Put fresh sand for half inch Height and again add super phosphate 50 – 100 grams..
  • Avoid Heavy salty water..

Benefits

  • It replaces 1/3 cost of the Animal Feed, and one can save Rs.50 per day per animal, with the same amount of nutrition content being fed to the Cows.
  • Azolla has 25 – 35% Content of Proteins, 10-15% Mineral Content, 7-10% of Essential Amino Acids, (Iron 1000—8600 PPM dry Weight). Vitamin A, Vitamin B 12, Beta Carotene, Calcium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Ferrous, Copper, Magnesium and Bio Active Substances.
  • Best Feed for Cows, Chicken, Goats, Sheep, Rabbits, Pigs, Cattle, and Fish.
